Charles Mitchell

Mr. Mitchell joins Grayson’s faculty as a science instructor after serving most recently as Dean of Students and a science teacher at an alternative accelerated high school in Philadelphia, where his classes included physics, chemistry, biology, and health for 9th through 12th grades. We are pleased to add to our team this enthusiastic educator with strong practical experience developing engaging lesson plans to meet students’ academic, intellectual, and social needs.

His teaching experience includes middle school science instruction at Young Scholars Charter School, Birney Preparatory Academy, and Harambee Charter Institute of Science and Technology, where his lessons included cross-curricular instruction and making lessons relevant to current events. In all of these institutions, his focus was teaching science through hands-on experimentation and instruction responsive to his students’ needs and capabilities.

As Dean of Students, he implemented restorative practices to redirect student behavior and repair professional relationships among the students and staff. This holistic approach to education also informs his drive to connect with students beyond the classroom, and has inspired him to lead a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including gardening, a science club, basketball and baseball, Saturday school classes, and a young men’s mentoring group.

Mr. Mitchell feels strongly that teachers need to keep parents very involved with their child’s progress, and believes educating scholars is a community effort. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, and lives in Philadelphia with his two children.
