My first year as Dean of Students at Grayson was a whirlwind of new experiences, challenges, and incredible moments. I’ve learned so much from the brilliant students, dedicated staff, and vibrant community. As I reflect on this past year, a few key takeaways stand out. Here are my top 5 lessons from my first year.
1. It’s okay “not to be smarter than a 5th grader.”
I’ve always prided myself on my knowledge, but the students at Grayson are on another level. I’ve been humbled (and amazed) by their insights, questions, and problem-solving abilities. It’s become clear that my role isn’t to have all the answers, but to facilitate a space where students feel empowered to find their own. I’ve learned to embrace the moments where a student knows more than I do—it’s a testament to the incredible learning happening here.
2. Be careful wearing a math team shirt if you don’t fully understand the equation on the front.
This is a lesson I learned the hard way. Early in the year, I proudly wore a math team shirt with a complex equation on it, only to be immediately asked by a student to explain it. I stumbled through a vague answer, and the student politely but pointedly corrected me. It was a great reminder to not just represent our students’ passions, but to try and understand them, too.
3. Gaga is FOR REAL, know the rules.
I’d heard about Gaga, but I wasn’t prepared for the intensity and strategic complexity of it. It’s more than just a game; it’s a social hub, a test of agility, and a source of fierce competition. I quickly learned the nuances of the rules—and the importance of staying on your toes.
4. Pi Day and May the 4th are actual holidays.
Before Grayson, I celebrated the usual holidays. Now, I have two new favorites on the calendar. The creativity and energy that go into celebrating Pi Day (March 14) and May the 4th (Star Wars Day) are incredible. It’s not just about a shared interest; it’s about building a community around fun, shared traditions. Plus, we get to eat pi(e) and launch rockets, too!
5. Looking forward to September and not June is normal when learning is fun and meaningful.
For as long as I can remember, the end of the school year was a race to the finish line. At Grayson, it’s di!erent. Our students are so engaged and excited about their work that the end of the year feels bittersweet. They’re not just ready for a break; they’re already thinking about the next semester. It’s a true sign that learning here isn’t just a task—it’s an adventure.

Mr. Risk was very honored to be asked by the Middle School Vocal Ensemble to join them onstage at Winterfest for their holiday parody of NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye.”

This is so touching I’m glad we have you here at Grayson Mr. Risk!
