Congratulations to our students, Nate (4th grade) and Benji (7th grade), for being selected as published writers in Creative Communication’s Poetic Power competitions! In addition to the honor of being published among thousands of entries nationwide, Nate’s work is recongized as one of the top ten poems submitted in his age group. His poem, Parkour Reborn, will receive special recognition in the Spring 2024 anthology. Benji’s poem, Ode to Procrastination, will appear in the soon-to-be-published Summer 2024 anthology. Their teacher, Ms. DiLullo, is incredibly proud of their work, sharing that “These awards showcase the incredible writing talent of these young Grayson poets, and inspire all our students in developing their skills and a love of writing.”
In addition to our Fall 2023 Creative Communication contest winners, copies of these selected poetry anthologies will be added to our school library’s permanent collection so future generations of students can draw inspiration from the exceptional creativity demonstrated by these gifted writers. As we celebrate their achievement, it is important to also acknowledge the support and encouragement of their teachers and families. The entire Grayson School community takes pride in their success!
Parkour Reborn
Jumping across rooftops,
Seamless landing.
Grappling to a building,
On top.
Wall climbing the pillar,
Even higher.
Zipline,
In the box.
Wall running,
Must be precise.
Land it, bust open the doors.
Vertigo, here I come.
— Nate (’32)

Ode to Procrastination
Here I sit at my dining room table,
Pondering,
Ruminating,
Stewing, brooding,
For hours mulling.
A deadline looming
Consuming my thoughts
Brain stagnant like a bog,
Over a single question,
What should I write about?
This single question that consumes my waking thought
A dam in the flow of thought,
I keep shoving against its concrete walls
Yet my efforts are met with failure,
The maddening futility of its looming malevolence
Casting black shadows over my thoughts
I sit there in silence staring in vain at my computer screen,
The empty page with lines not yet filled seems to taunt me,
Jeering,
That gloating blank page…
I’ll make eggs!
— Benji (’29)
